Are your personal data safe in government registers? In Prešov, an employee of the alien police was exposed for illegally collecting and sharing information about dozens of people with third parties.
What exactly happened
On July 6, 2026, an investigator from the Inspection Service Directorate (ÚIS) filed charges against an employee of the cudzinecká polícia (alien police) department in Prešov.
According to the investigation, Lieutenant Diana T. searched the information systems of the Ministry of Interior for the data of 67 people in December 2022 and February 2024, without any official need. The woman shared the obtained information with unauthorized third parties, giving them an illegal advantage — access to data they could not otherwise obtain legally.
Why this concerns migrants
The alien police department collects a huge amount of sensitive information. This is where Ukrainians apply for the status of dočasné útočisko (temporary protection) or residence permits.
The police databases store addresses, passport data, photos, and information about relatives. The leak of such data can pose a serious threat, as fraudsters or shell companies can use the information. Currently, the inspection service has not disclosed the data of citizens of which countries were compromised or to whom they were transferred.
What punishment is threatened
The police officer acted against the laws on personal data protection and public service. She is accused of abuse of power by an official, as well as a criminal offense regarding the illegal handling of personal data.
The Inspection Service Directorate continues its investigation. If found guilty in court, the woman faces dismissal from the interior ministry and a possible prison sentence. The Ministry of Interior's inspection service regularly identifies similar violations within the department — earlier this year, in other regions, corruption schemes involving migration police officers were also recorded, who expedited the processing of documents for foreigners for bribes.
