In the district of Žiar nad Hronom, an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) has been confirmed on a commercial family farm. In just a few days, dozens of animals have died, and symptoms of the fever have been found in many others. There is no vaccine against this virus, so authorities have begun depopulating the farm (over 800 heads). A 3-km quarantine zone and a 10-km surveillance zone have been established around the farm. The infection is recorded for the first time in this region and threatens the destruction of animal farming in the district.
