Bratislava Region once again showed its commitment to sustainable transport by taking second place in the 13th nationwide competition "Do práce na bicykli" (To work by bike) in June 2026. This campaign, organized by the Ministry of Transport of the Slovak Republic, aims to encourage people to replace cars with bicycles, walking, or public transport for their daily commutes.
Results and Achievements of Bratislava Region
Participants from Bratislava Region made over 44,000 bike trips, covering a total of 461,376 kilometers. This helped save over 115,000 kg of CO₂ emissions, significantly contributing to better air quality and reducing traffic congestion in cities. Furthermore, Bratislava Region ranked first in the category of using public transport and walking, highlighting the region's comprehensive approach to supporting eco-friendly ways of traveling.
Nationwide Figures and Other Leaders
Across Slovakia, 15,226 people, 1,256 employers, and 4,464 teams participated in the "Do práce na bicykli" campaign. Together, they traveled almost 3 million kilometers by bike, on foot, or using public transport, saving about 671 tons of CO₂.
Among all samosprávnych krajov (self-governing regions), Trenčín Self-Governing Region won, and Žilina Self-Governing Region took third place. These results show the growing interest of Slovaks in active forms of mobility and their willingness to join initiatives that promote sustainable development.
Investing in the Future
The head of Bratislava samosprávny kraj, Juraj Droba, stated that the region will continue to invest in the development of bike paths, safe cycling infrastructure, and the integration of cycling with public transport. These investments confirm that sustainable transport is not just a trend but an essential part of the daily lives of the region's residents, contributing to cleaner air and healthier cities.
