Comenius University (UK) in Bratislava plans to continue modernizing its dormitories. The next one to be renovated is Internát Družba (Družba Dormitory). However, the large-scale reconstruction of "Družba" will only start after other repairs are finished, to avoid leaving even more students without housing.

Project and Funding Details

University spokesperson Eva Kopecká said that project documentation for the repair of engineering networks and bathrooms in one of the Družba residential blocks is ready. They plan to expand it to include a full interior reconstruction. The estimated cost of the work is 13 million euros. They plan to get the money from the State Housing Development Fund (Štátny fond rozvoja bývania).

Comenius University dormitories have needed repairs for a long time – most of them were built in the 1970s. However, despite their condition, UK provides housing for a larger percentage of its students than many other European universities.

Current Work at Internát Ľudovíta Štúra

This summer, Comenius University is continuing repairs at its largest dormitory, Internát Ľudovíta Štúra (Ľudovít Štúr Dormitory) in the Mlynská dolina (Mlynská Valley) area of Bratislava. Starting in September, they plan to open three renovated floors in block VBA, which will provide about 200 new places.

The reconstruction of Internát Ľudovíta Štúra is being funded from two sources: the Slovak Recovery and Resilience Plan (Plán obnovy a odolnosti SR) and the university's own funds. Almost 7 million euros will be spent on repairing block VBA (for 1000 places). About 12.5 million euros will be invested in block VBB (for 1300 places).

During the first two phases of repairs in both blocks, all engineering networks were replaced, bathrooms were renovated, roofs and facades were insulated, and new windows, balcony doors, and electrical wiring were installed. The third phase plans include bringing in new furniture, replacing floors, and painting walls.

The university is trying to finish the work as quickly as possible so that students can move into the renovated rooms and the number of available places can gradually increase.

Future Plans

In the long term, Comenius University wants not just to repair old buildings, but to create a complete student campus with space for studying, cultural life, socializing, and sports.
