If you plan to travel on the D1 highway in Slovakia, especially near the High Tatras, please know that the Bôrik tunnel will be temporarily closed. The National Highway Company (Národná diaľničná spoločnosť, NDS) is performing regular maintenance on the tunnel's systems, which requires nighttime closures.

When and where to expect restrictions?

According to police information, traffic restrictions on the D1 highway section between the Mengusovce and Poprad interchanges, including the Bôrik tunnel, are planned for the night of Saturday, July 26, 2026.

  • Date: July 26, 2026.
  • Time: from 00:00 to 04:00.
  • Section: D1 highway between Mengusovce and Poprad interchanges.
  • Tunnel: Bôrik (both tubes).

During these four hours, the right tunnel tube towards Prešov and the left tunnel tube towards Žilina will be closed.

Alternative route

Drivers will need to use a detour. The detour will go from the Mengusovce highway interchange along road I/18 through the town of Svit, from where you can rejoin the highway.

Police urge all road users to be extra careful during the closure, follow temporary road signs, and be patient.

Why is this happening?

Regular tunnel maintenance is key to ensuring the reliability of technologies that manage ventilation, lighting, driver information, and safety. NDS aims to carry out most service work during nighttime hours when traffic is lowest to minimize the impact on daytime travel.

Maintenance includes:

  • Tunnel cleaning, including the roadway, sidewalks, and drainage.
  • Maintenance of technical equipment: fans, lighting, and road signs.
  • Testing of control and safety systems, especially fire protection equipment.

These actions are part of the ongoing care for Slovakia's most important road infrastructure, ensuring safety and smooth traffic flow.
