Heat up to +33°C with thunderstorms expected in Slovakia

After a few cool days, summer heat is returning to Slovakia. This weekend, temperatures will reach up to +33°C, but will then change sharply with night thunderstorms. Meteorologists warn of high temperatures and heavy rain, especially in the southwest of the country.

Hot Weekend: Where It Will Be Hottest

Saturday, July 26, will start with a cool morning, but by the afternoon, thermometers will rise to +21…+26°C, and in southern regions – up to +30°C. The wind will be moderate, 10–25 km/h, mainly in the southwest of Slovakia.

On Sunday, July 27, the temperature will continue to rise. For several southern districts in the Bratislava Region (Bratislavský kraj), Trnava Region (Trnavský kraj), Nitra Region (Nitriansky kraj), and Banská Bystrica Region (Banskobystrický kraj), meteorologists have issued a Level 1 warning for high temperatures. In the hottest regions, up to +33°C is expected. Most of the country will have clear or partly cloudy skies, with temperatures from +28°C to +33°C. It will be coolest in Horehronie, the Žilina Region (Žilinský kraj), Spiš, and the northeast, where temperatures will range from +24…+28°C. Wind speed will be 10–30 km/h.

Night Thunderstorms and Cooling

However, the situation will change by Sunday evening. A cold front will pass through Slovakia, bringing thunderstorms with heavy rain, strong gusty winds, and significant lightning activity. According to the iMeteo portal, thunderstorms are expected in the southwest of Slovakia in the evening and will intensify on Sunday night into Monday. They will then gradually spread to other regions, and it will cool down again at the beginning of the week.

Return of Tropical Heat

A sharp turn in the weather is expected in the middle of next week, when tropical temperatures will return, possibly exceeding +35°C in the south of the country.

Slovakia, like much of Europe, is experiencing the effects of abnormal heat this summer, leading to record temperatures and droughts. According to meteorologists, July 2026 in Bratislava and Košice is also marked by high temperatures.
