For many residents of Košice, especially those living in the Sídlisko KVP area, daily commutes and walks will soon become more comfortable. The Košice – Sídlisko KVP city district is starting a large-scale program to renew road surfaces and pedestrian zones. This means not only improving infrastructure but also temporary changes in traffic organization, which you should be prepared for.
What exactly will be repaired and when
The first phase of work starts on Monday, July 27, 2026. In this phase, the main focus will be on the sidewalks on Wurmova and Dénešova streets. A total of 2700 square meters of pedestrian paths are planned to be renovated. According to the spokesperson for the city district, Viktor Vurm, this work should be completed within a month.
A week later, starting Monday, August 3, 2026, road workers will begin repairing specific sections of roads. On Čordákova street (between entrances # 6–26 and 34–44) and Dénešova street (between entrances # 57–85), 4450 square meters of road surface will be renewed.
Cost and impact on traffic
The total cost of the first phase of sidewalk and road repairs will be approximately 221,000 euros with VAT. This work will be carried out by the company COLAS Slovakia, a. s.
It is important to note that road repair work will require temporary changes in traffic organization. Drivers should pay close attention to temporary road signs and be especially careful in these areas.
Plans for the future
This is only the first phase of a large-scale reconstruction. According to Viktor Vurm, the KVP city district plans to renew another 7000 square meters of sidewalks and over 2000 square meters of roads in its territory this summer.
The mayor of the KVP city district, Ladislav Lorinc, noted that the investment debt in public infrastructure is significant, but they aim to reduce it systematically. Therefore, sidewalks and roads are repaired annually across their entire width, not just locally. This contributes to safe and comfortable movement for both pedestrians and drivers. This year, special attention is paid to sidewalk repairs, especially those sections that are in the most unsatisfactory condition. Barrier-free modifications are also planned in 18 locations.
