Bratislava's Štefánik Airport is preparing for a big expansion of its route network. Two leading European low-cost airlines, Ryanair and Wizz Air, have announced new flights from Slovakia's capital. This expansion offers passengers new chances for affordable travel to popular cities in Europe.
Ryanair: Seven New Routes from October 2025
Irish low-cost airline Ryanair will launch seven new regular flights from Bratislava starting October 26-27, 2025. This will be one of the company's biggest expansions in the region in recent years. The new routes will connect to attractive cities in Southern and Western Europe, including beach resorts and cultural centers:
Barcelona, Spain — daily (7 flights per week)
Lamezia Terme, Italy — 3 flights per week (Monday, Friday, Sunday)
Palermo, Italy — 2 flights per week (Tuesday, Sunday)
Alicante, Spain — 4 flights per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday)
Naples, Italy — 4 flights per week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday)
Athens, Greece — 3 flights per week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday)
Malaga, Spain — 4 flights per week (Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday)
These destinations match the growing demand for holiday and business travel from Slovakia, offering passengers many choices for planning vacations or work trips.
Wizz Air: New Base and 13 New Routes
Competition in Bratislava is getting stronger as Wizz Air has also announced a significant expansion of its presence. Starting November 14, 2025, the airline will open a new base at Bratislava Airport, with two modern Airbus A321neo aircraft based there. This will allow the launch of 13 new international routes, including Athens, Alicante, Basel, Barcelona, Varna, Lamezia Terme, Malaga, Naples, Niš, Oslo, Palermo, Plovdiv, and Tel Aviv.
This move not only strengthens Wizz Air's position in the region but also offers passengers even more options for travel to popular tourist and business centers in and outside Europe. At the same time, Wizz Air is gradually reducing its operations in Vienna due to high operating costs, making Bratislava a key hub for the company in the region.
The expansion by Ryanair and Wizz Air shows increasing competition between the two largest low-cost airlines in Europe. Some routes, such as Athens, Alicante, Barcelona, Lamezia Terme, Malaga, Naples, and Palermo, are offered by both airlines. This promises passengers better prices and more flight choices.
Bratislava Airport is experiencing a period of rapid growth. In August 2025, it served over 355,000 passengers, which is 10% more than in the same period last year. In the first eight months of 2025, the airport handled almost 1.6 million passengers, and the number of flights and cargo volume also increased. The new routes from Ryanair and Wizz Air will only strengthen this trend, making Bratislava an important aviation hub in Central Europe.
