Monday evening for hundreds of drivers returning to Bratislava ended with hours of standing in a traffic jam. Around 5:30 PM at the 21st kilometer of the D1 highway (D1 highway) towards the capital, several cars collided, and traffic in this direction completely stopped.
One person was injured. The man suffered polytrauma (serious injuries to several parts of the body) and was in serious condition. Transporting him by ground ambulance would have taken too long, so a helicopter from the Air - Transport Europe air ambulance service landed at the scene. The injured person was flown by helicopter to the University Hospital Bratislava - Kramáre. His current condition has not been officially reported.
While police, rescuers, and medics worked on the highway, the police redirected traffic from the Senec exit, advising drivers to choose alternative routes. For those already stuck in the line before the accident site, the police promised to allow turning into oncoming traffic as soon as the road situation permits. At the same time, officers strongly asked not to do this on their own without their instruction, because such a maneuver without control on a high-speed highway can itself cause a new accident.
The highway was fully reopened that same evening, shortly after 8:10 PM. The closure lasted about three hours. The police were still investigating the exact cause of the collision of several cars as of yesterday.
If you regularly drive the D1 highway (D1 highway) during rush hours, keep a backup route through Senec in mind. And save the emergency service numbers in Slovakia — hopefully, you won’t need them, but it’s good to know them.
