Slovakia Post management accused of pressuring employees

The opposition Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) has accused the management of the state company Slovenská pošta (Slovak Post) of unlawful pressure and harassment of employees. The most serious accusation is that employees are forced to buy lottery tickets and SIM cards with their own money to meet sales targets and not lose bonuses.

The post office management strongly denies all accusations, calling them part of a political struggle.

What the accusations are about

According to representatives of KDH, including MP Igor Janckulík, they have received numerous complaints from postal workers. Employees report a chronic staff shortage, forcing them to do the jobs of several people at once.

The main claims made by the party are:

  • Forced sales: Employees are allegedly forced to sell at least €550 worth of lottery tickets and two SIM cards every month. To meet the target and receive a bonus, some of them buy these products themselves.
  • Excessive control: Instead of helping and increasing staff, management increases control, looking for formal errors (missing stamps, signatures), for which they then withhold bonuses.
  • Overload: One manager may be in charge of two branches at the same time while serving customers at the counter.
  • Branch closures: KDH also criticizes the mass closure of post office branches in rural areas, which worsens access to basic services.

Because of this situation, KDH has initiated the convening of a parliamentary committee, scheduled to meet on August 4. MPs will demand explanations from the post office management and information about the salaries and bonuses of top management.

Slovenská pošta's position

Slovenská pošta rejects the accusations, considering them "general statements and assumptions" as part of a political campaign. Company spokesperson Eva Peterová emphasized that compliance with labor law is a priority. She urged anyone with specific evidence of violations to provide it to management or the relevant supervisory bodies for investigation.

The company also denies systematically overloading employees. According to their data, postal service volume has fallen by 62% since 2018, while the average salary has increased by about 60%. Therefore, optimizing staff and combining functions is, in their opinion, a standard principle of effective management, not harassment.

It is worth noting that Slovenská pošta is undergoing a large-scale transformation due to its difficult financial situation. The company ended 2025 with a loss of €1.7 million and is actively closing unprofitable branches to avoid bankruptcy.
