From July 2025, the list of services allowed to control traffic on Slovak highways has expanded. Drivers must now be ready to be stopped not only by the police but also by labor inspectors. The relevant changes to the laws on road traffic and the organization of working time in transport have already come into force.

The new powers of the inspectors are aimed at checking commercial transport. Special attention is paid to:

  • Trucks weighing over 3.5 tons.

  • Vehicles designed to carry more than 9 people (including the driver).

What are inspectors allowed to do?

Labor inspectors can now act independently or together with the police. During an inspection, they must be in uniform with the state coat of arms. Their powers include:

  1. Stopping the vehicle.

  2. Checking tachograph records and driver cards (using special software TAGRA Control).

  3. Confiscating the registration certificate or license plates in case of serious violations.

  4. Ordering a forced stop and removing the driver from further driving.

The main goal is the rest regime

The main focus of the checks is on drivers following their work schedule. Inspectors will monitor continuous driving time, mandatory breaks, and rest periods. These measures are intended to reduce the number of accidents caused by fatigue of professional drivers.

Fines and sanctions

Drivers face strict financial penalties for not following the established rules:

  • Up to 700 euros – a fine on the spot (within the block procedure).

  • If critical violations are found, the inspector has the right to immediately prohibit further movement of the vehicle.

Important for carriers: Experts emphasize the need for strict record-keeping of working hours. Proper use of tachographs is now not only a matter of internal discipline but also a guarantee of avoiding huge fines during road checks.
