A pilot project has started in Bratislava that could change the usual look of public transport stops. At the T. P. Kolakoviča stop in the Devínska Nová Ves district, the first electronic displays on e-paper (electronic paper) have been installed, showing the timetable in real time.
This innovation, being tested by Dopravný podnik Bratislava (Bratislava Transport Company), has several key advantages. The main one is autonomy: the displays are powered by solar panels and do not need to be connected to the electrical grid. This greatly simplifies their installation, especially in places where laying cables is difficult or expensive.
How do the new displays work and what's next?
The data on the screens is updated remotely, which allows for prompt display of any changes in the timetable, information about delays, unforeseen events, or important announcements. This means that passengers will always receive the most up-to-date information without the need for staff to go out for manual updates.
As part of the pilot project, the functionality of the displays is planned to be expanded by adding notifications about route changes and other important events. Testing of larger format e-paper screens is also being prepared, which could become a full alternative to traditional electronic boards. If this experiment is successful, Dopravný podnik Bratislava intends to extend this technology to other stops in the city.
This step is part of Bratislava's broader strategy to modernize public transport and implement "smart" solutions. The city is actively introducing new technologies, such as colored information boards and the TAPni fare payment system, which allows buying tickets directly at the validator using a payment card or mobile phone.
Thus, Bratislava continues to move towards more environmentally friendly and convenient public transport, making it more accessible and informative for all residents and visitors of the city.
