In January, fuel prices in Slovakia increased again. Drivers pay on average 1.5 cents more per liter for both gasoline and diesel. Basic and premium types of fuel reached the highest prices in the last month.
According to the Statistical Office of the Slovak Republic, A-95 gasoline costs about 1.45 euros per liter, and diesel costs a little over 1.40 euros. Despite the increase, prices remain lower than last year: year-on-year, gasoline and diesel are about 8–9% cheaper.
Economists explain the current price development by a combination of market factors and the international situation. Since the beginning of the year, the price of oil on world markets has increased by almost 6%, which is linked to geopolitical tensions, especially in the Middle East. At certain times, oil prices even rose by more than 10%, reaching their highest levels since the end of October.
Despite this, forecasts for the near future remain cautiously positive. Analysts expect fuel prices to stabilize rather than fluctuate sharply in the coming period, with possible changes not exceeding a few cents per liter. Oil and gasoline reserves are currently sufficient, which reduces the risk of sharp price increases.
In regional comparison, gasoline in Slovakia remains one of the most expensive in the V4 countries (Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary), while diesel is among the cheaper ones. Compared to average prices in the EU, fuel in Slovakia is still significantly cheaper than in Western Europe.
