About the Faculty

The Faculty of Medicine at Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice is one of two such institutions in the country. The faculty has eight departments, including anatomy, physiology, surgery, pediatrics, neurology, pharmacology, pathological anatomy, and internal medicine.

Education is provided in Slovak and English for bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degree programs. There are 8 educational programs available in total, including specialized fields for international students. The training includes both theoretical subjects and clinical practice.

To apply, you need to submit an application form (prihláška) and pay a fee of €30. The deadline for applications for general medicine, dentistry, and doctoral studies is February 28, 2026. Students can live in a dormitory (internát); the accommodation conditions should be clarified individually.

Admission to the Faculty

For most bachelor's programs, admission is grantedwithout entrance exams— based on the average grade of the certificate in relevant subjects. A bachelor's diploma in the relevant field is required for master's programs. Applications are submitted via ePrihláška.

Frequently asked questions about the faculty

What to take for the entrance exam at LF UPJŠ (Faculty of Medicine)?+

Entrance exam — written test in biology and chemistry: 200 questions (100 biology + 100 chemistry), 150 minutes, maximum 800 points.

There is no fixed passing score — the best scores according to the ranking are admitted within the planned intake.

Exam dates 2026: 24–26.04, 15.05 and 08–June; reserve date — June.

How many years does it take to study to become a doctor at UPJŠ and what are the programs?+

General Medicine (všeobecné lekárstvo) — 6 years, title MUDr. Dental Medicine (zubné lekárstvo) — 5 years, title MDDr. (the new 5-year dental medicine program was approved at the beginning of 2025).

The faculty has 8 accredited programs in 5 fields: besides medicine — bachelor's programs (physiotherapy, nursing, laboratory diagnostic methods, public health) and master's programs (physiotherapy, public health, nursing, bioanalytical diagnostics).

Planned intake: General Medicine ~210 places, Dental Medicine ~40.

How much does it cost to submit an application to LF UPJŠ and when is the deadline?+

Fee — €30 for e-application (e-prihláška) and €50 for paper application. Payment — exclusively by bank transfer.

The deadline for applications for general and dental medicine is from January to February (this is earlier than for most faculties).

Only one program can be entered per application form; applications are submitted via e-prihlaska.upjs.sk.

Is it possible to study medicine at LF UPJŠ in English and how many students are at the faculty?+

Yes, LF UPJŠ also teaches general medicine in English for foreign self-paying students – this is a paid program. Slovak-language medicine in full-time study is free, but requires an entrance exam in Slovak.

The faculty consists of approximately 70 departments (pracoviská), including clinics of the Univerzitná nemocnica L. Pasteura, where students undergo practical training.

Practical training at a real clinical base is one of the advantages of the faculty.
