About the University

The Pavol Jozef Šafárik University in Košice is a state-run, classic higher education institution founded in 1959. It has five faculties and educates about 7,500 students, including 1,500 foreigners. It is one of two universities in Slovakia that train doctors.

What is the passing score and exam for medicine at UPJŠ?+

There is no fixed passing score; applicants are ranked by their written test scores. The test has 200 questions (100 biology + 100 chemistry), lasts 150 minutes, and has a maximum of 800 points.

The best applicants are admitted based on ranking within the planned intake: for general medicine (všeobecné lekárstvo), about 210 places were planned; for dentistry (zubné lekárstvo), about 40.

Dates for entrance exams 2026: preliminary 24–April, then 15.05 and 08–June; reserve term June.

How much does it cost to submit an application form at UPJŠ?+

For the Faculty of Medicine UPJŠ, the fee is €30 for an electronic application form (e-prihláška) and €50 for a paper one. Fees may differ at other faculties.

The application form is submitted electronically via e-prihlaska.upjs.sk (AIS2); the electronic form is cheaper and more convenient than the paper one.

Can I study to become a doctor at UPJŠ in English?+

Yes. UPJŠ (Faculty of Medicine) is known for its general medicine program in English for foreign students. Studying in English is paid (self-financed).

Slovak-language medicine in full-time study within the standard length is free, but requires knowledge of Slovak and passing an entrance exam in Slovak.

General medicine lasts 6 years (title MUDr.), dentistry - 5 years (title MDDr.).

When is the deadline for applying to UPJŠ Medicine for 2026/2027?+
