The sound of bending metal and the crash of breaking glass. This is how a trip ended for a driver in the Bratislava region who got behind the wheel while heavily intoxicated. After causing a traffic accident, patrol officers tested him with a breathalyzer – the result shocked even experienced law enforcement officers.
The device showed 3.54 per mille of alcohol in the driver's blood. This is a dose considered critical for the body and can lead to loss of consciousness. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured in the accident, but the driver now faces criminal proceedings.
Zero Tolerance and Criminal Responsibility
This case is not the only one in recent days. The police of the Bratislava region reported that they regularly detain drunk drivers whose readings significantly exceed permissible limits. Law enforcement officers remind us again of the consequences of such actions.
It is important to remember that Slovakia has zero tolerance for alcohol behind the wheel. Any amount of alcohol per mille is a violation. If the blood alcohol level exceeds one per mille (1.00 ‰), it is classified as a criminal offense – endangering under the influence of an addictive substance (ohrozenie pod vplyvom návykovej látky).
For such a crime, the penalty is imprisonment for up to one year. In addition, the driver will certainly lose their license for a long time and receive a significant monetary fine. The police urge citizens to be responsible and not to drive after consuming alcohol, as not only freedom but also human life may be at stake.
