In Košice, in the Terasa district, a passerby was attacked in broad daylight. The incident happened on Konvalinková street, near the busy Ružová street, and has again raised the long-standing problem of safety in the city. Locals say the situation is getting worse, and the police cannot handle it.
What happened?
A witness, Patrik, saw the attack. He intervened to stop the attacker and called the police. According to him, the attacker was very drunk and was detained. Patrik also said that the detained person, along with others, is living illegally in a building owned by the city of Košice. He added that he called the municipal police at least six times in April and May 2026 alone due to disturbances in and around this building.
Residents' concerns
People living in the Terasa district are seriously concerned about their safety. They complain about constant noise, disorder, and aggressive behavior in public places. Many say that calling the police does not change anything for long: the offenders are simply driven away and move to neighboring streets. One resident spoke about the situation on Trieda SNP, where, according to her, the police just move the same groups to another street.
A similar situation is happening near Toryská street. There, residents are forced to drive away offenders from the park near the Galéria bus stop every day because of shouting and disorder. Locals fear that if the city authorities do not intervene more actively, things will only get worse.
Authorities' reaction
Local councilwoman Patrícia Helfenová reacted to the attack. She called on the Košice authorities and the police to act more decisively. According to her, she regularly contacts the police leadership, but the situation does not change and remains unbearable. The state police responded that they are dealing with the problem as much as their staff and resources allow.
Zdenko Lipták, a candidate for the autumn elections, also criticized the situation. He believes that the situation will only worsen if the municipality does not solve the problem of these groups sleeping rough. He named problem areas such as Luník II, Ľudová street, and the area near Račov potok, and called on the municipal police to pay more attention to them.
Residents of Terasa expect concrete actions from the city regarding the problematic buildings it owns. People are asking how long the authorities will tolerate such a situation before someone gets seriously injured.
