Robert Fico: EU plan for Russian assets for Ukraine could fail

Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico expressed doubt about the EU's idea to use frozen Russian assets to lend money to Ukraine. In his opinion, this plan appeared in public too early, before the European Commission explained all possible risks.

At the European Council meeting in Brussels, Fico ensured that the joint statement on Ukraine did not mention the "confiscation" of Russian assets to finance a so-called reparation loan.

The Prime Minister also insisted that the European Commission propose alternative ways to help Ukraine for the next two years. His proposal was supported. Fico believes it is a mistake that the plan to use frozen assets appeared in the media before all risks were considered. According to him, at the December European Council, it could "face reality and end in failure." EU leaders understand well that such a step could violate international law, lead to lawsuits from Russia, and result in harsh countermeasures.

Peace is more important than money
Fico is convinced that the EU should focus more on a peace plan for Ukraine and work on it as a strong global power.
