November 9, 2025 near the town of Pezinok, close to Bratislava, a serious collision of two trains happened — the fast train Ex 620 Tatran (Košice – Bratislava) and the regional express REx 1814 (Bratislava – Nitra). The incident happened around 7:30 PM, shortly after the regional train left the Pezinok station.
Rescue services, police, and medics immediately arrived at the scene of the accident. As a result of the collision, at least 79 people were injured, of whom three received serious injuries. Fortunately, there were no fatalities.
A police spokesperson confirmed that both train drivers passed alcohol and drug tests – the results were negative. The causes of the accident are being investigated by detectives together with representatives of Železnice Slovenskej republiky (ŽSR) (Railways of the Slovak Republic).
The likely cause of Sunday's accident on the railway line between Bratislava and Pezinok was one of the trains running a red signal.
As a result of the incident, train traffic on the Pezinok – Svätý Jur section remains suspended. Temporary bus transport has been organized on the sections Pezinok – Cífer and Pezinok – Bratislava-Vinohrady.
Some fast trains have been rerouted via Trnava or Galanta, and some regional services have been canceled. Some connections are delayed by more than an hour, reported Železničná spoločnosť Slovensko (ZSSK) (Slovak National Transport Company).
The company also stated that ZSSK employees involved in the incident did not suffer serious injuries and are cooperating with ŽSR, the police, and rescue services.
The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, reacted to the event on social media, urging citizens not to spread false or hateful comments:
"We must all unite now and think about the injured, not spread hateful nonsense. This tragic event will require a thorough investigation after the rescue operations are completed – whether it was a technical failure or human error."
