Despite initial publicity, the ban on alcohol consumption by passengers will not affect regular passenger cars where a person simply sits in a seat.
The updated law concerns vehicles where a passenger directly affects traffic safety — mainly motorcycles, quad bikes, and multi-seater bicycles. On such transport, a companion can cause an accident due to incorrect body tilt, delayed reaction, or drunken behavior.
For violation, a fine of up to 50 euros on the spot or up to 100 euros in administrative proceedings will be threatened. Thus, a sober passenger becomes mandatory only where their condition is critically important for the stability of control.
