Today, July 23, around 12:17 PM, weak tremors were recorded in northern Slovakia, in the Liptov region. The event did not pose a threat to residents or infrastructure.
According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake's magnitude was 1.5. The epicenter was north of the town of Liptovský Mikuláš, and the focus was at a depth of about six kilometers. Tremors of this strength are usually not felt by people, except perhaps in isolated cases very close to the epicenter in complete silence.
A seismic instrument at a station in Liptovská Anna also recorded vibrations. At the time of publication, there were no reports of damage or that any local residents felt the tremors.
Although this earthquake was minor, it is worth remembering that Slovakia is located in a seismically active zone. For example, in October 2023, a much stronger earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9 occurred in the east of the country, causing damage to buildings. Historically active zones in the country include the areas around Komárno, Žilina, Banská Bystrica, and the Little Carpathians region.
