Bratislava Dormitories: 3282 Applications for 2169 Beds — Prices and Where Else a Student Can Live

This academic year, Bratislava student dormitories received 3282 applications — but only 2169 beds are available. More than a thousand students risk being left without a place, so if you haven't submitted your documents yet — it's worth hurrying or immediately looking for alternatives.

The most popular student campuses are Mlyny and Mladá Garda. A bed in a double room this semester costs approximately from €300 per month, and places are taken quickly. Ukrainian students coming for their first year should apply right after enrollment, without waiting for September.

What Changed After Renovations

Slovakia is renovating dormitories with money from the Recovery Plan, and this has already produced results — after the work, 963 places were added in three dormitories.

  • Starohájská and Vlčie hrdlo — renovation was completed back in 2025, and the updated rooms are already accepting residents.
  • Dolnozemská — work finished in June this year, places are available for this semester.
  • Bellova — renovation is still ongoing here, 162 places will open in May 2027.

If There Is No Place in the Dormitory

A cheaper reality for many students is the private sector. A room in the Petržalka or Ružinov districts can often be found at a price comparable to a dormitory, especially if you share with two or three people. But you should start looking now: closer to September, decent options disappear and prices rise.

What to Do

  1. Submit an application for a dormitory through your university's system immediately after enrollment.
  2. At the same time, monitor private listings — don't wait for a response from the dormitory.
  3. If your budget is limited, look for districts a bit farther from the center — public transport in Bratislava makes this not a problem.

Remember: a place in a dormitory is not only savings but also the first circle of acquaintances in a new city. So it's worth fighting for it, but keep plan B ready.
