The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, will have their first full bilateral meeting on Friday, September 5. It will take place in Uzhhorod, near the Slovak border, Fico confirmed during a media appearance.
According to him, one of the main topics of the negotiations will be the issue of attacks on energy infrastructure.
"We react very sharply to the strikes on oil facilities. On Friday in Uzhhorod, I will talk about this very seriously, because it is impossible to allow attacks on infrastructure that is vital for Slovakia as well," the prime minister stated.
Before the meeting with Zelenskyy, Fico is on a visit to China, where he is participating in the celebration of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. There, he has already held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin. During the conversation with the Russian leader, Fico criticized the EU's decision and emphasized the desire to "normalize relations" between Bratislava and Moscow, especially in the energy sector.
Fico also stated that Slovakia will oppose the European Commission's plan to stop importing Russian gas from 2028, calling such a decision harmful to European countries. After the official negotiations, he had an almost hour-long one-on-one conversation with Putin, the main topic of which was the war in Ukraine. Fico himself confirmed that he had drawn "several conclusions and messages" that he plans to convey to Zelenskyy during the meeting in Uzhhorod.
