The European Union plans to introduce a fee for entering the Schengen Area for citizens of countries that use visa-free travel. This means people will need to get an electronic travel authorization called ETIAS. The cost will be 20 euros.
When the new rules start
The new system is expected to start at the end of 2026. There have been delays in setting up the system. ETIAS is not a visa. It is an electronic travel authorization for short stays in Schengen countries, up to 90 days within a 180-day period.
Once you get the authorization, it will be valid for three years or until your passport expires. The authorization will allow you to enter Schengen countries many times without paying again, as long as your personal information does not change.
The ETIAS system aims to improve security at the EU's external borders and to check travelers before they arrive in Europe.
