Used cars in Slovakia have increased in price by 900 euros over the year — market overview

Just a year ago, the average used car in Slovakia (Slovakia) cost €11,500, today it is already €12,400. In the first half of 2026, prices on the secondary market rose by €900 compared to the same period in 2025. If you postponed buying a car “for later,” that “later” cost you almost a thousand euros.

This data was published by the company Cebia, which analyzes the Slovak (Slovakia) used car market, writes Teraz.sk. The average age of the sold car was 9.45 years — 1.5 months less than last year. However, cars are being sold more slowly: on average 64 days, three days more than in the first half of last year.

The market is gradually “turning away” from diesel

Diesel cars still make up the majority of offers — 51.88% of all listings. But over the year, their share fell by 3.2 percentage points. Meanwhile, gasoline cars added two points and reached 39.39%.

The most noticeable “rejuvenation” was in gasoline cars: their average age decreased from 10.06 to 9.3 years. Diesels, on the contrary, are aging — from 9.77 to 10.17 years. A simple pattern emerges: fresher gasoline cars are entering the market more actively, while old diesels still dominate the budget segment.

Alternative fuel types are slowly but steadily growing:

  • Hybrids — 4.18% of the market compared to 3.33% last year. Their average age increased from 4.59 to 5.12 years.

  • Electric cars — 3.20% compared to 2.57%. Average age — 4.97 years.

  • Cars running on LPG and CNG — about 1% of all listings.

Despite the increase in share, electric cars remain a niche segment. According to the European Alternative Fuels Observatory, in 2024 the share of fully electric cars among new registrations in Slovakia (Slovakia) was only 2.38% — one of the lowest figures in the EU. This directly affects the secondary market: the supply of “two- to three-year-old” electric cars is minimal.

What people buy in Slovakia

The lineup of leaders has hardly changed. The best-selling model remains Škoda Octavia with a 6.31% market share. Next are Škoda Superb, Volkswagen Golf, Volkswagen Passat, Škoda Fabia, Kia Ceed, Hyundai i30, Škoda Kodiaq, and Volkswagen Tiguan. Audi A6 closes the top ten, its share fell from 1.70% to 1.30%.

Cebia experts note a moderate decline in the share of premium and luxury models — buyers are leaning toward practical “workhorses” of the middle class.

Import does not stop

Slovaks (Slovakia) continue to massively bring cars from abroad. In the first half of the year, 28,215 used passenger cars were imported into the country — only 512 less than last year for the same period. The main sources are Germany, Austria, and other EU neighbors. Low registration fees on older cars make import attractive, although the quality of imported cars is a separate story.

What this means for you

If you plan to buy a car in the coming months, consider a few points.

  1. Do not expect prices to fall. The trend is steadily upward: in the 4th quarter of 2024, the average price was €11,500, in the 1st quarter of 2025 — €12,300, now — €12,400. In a year and a half, the market added nine hundred euros — almost a thousand.

  2. Allow time for searching. Cars sell on average in 64 days — good examples for reasonable money are taken quickly, and the rest “hang” in listings for weeks.

  3. Check the history of imported cars. Almost 30 thousand cars in half a year — this is a market where rolled-back mileage and hidden accidents are not uncommon. Before buying, it is worth ordering a VIN code check through services like Cebia or carVertical.
