Police in the Košice region recorded three accidents where cars overturned in just one day. In two cases, alcohol or refusing a breathalyzer test was involved in the crashes, reports Korzár.
The most serious case happened on the road between the villages of Ruskov and Ďurkov in the Košice-okolie district. A 22-year-old driver of a Škoda Fabia lost control on a right turn, drove off the road, and the car overturned onto its roof. During the test, he was found to have 1.6 per mille of alcohol in his blood — the device showed 0.77 mg/l in exhaled air. Police have already charged him with a crime — endangerment under the influence of an addictive substance. Remember: Slovakia has zero tolerance for alcohol while driving, so driving while intoxicated is not an administrative offense, but a criminal case.
The second accident occurred near the village of Stakčín in the Snina district. A 32-year-old driver of a Volkswagen Golf also lost control, went into a ditch, and hit a fence. The man refused a breathalyzer test both at the scene and at the medical facility. According to Slovak rules, such a refusal is practically equivalent to confirming intoxication — he was banned from driving further, writes kosice.nasenovinky.sk.
The third accident, near the town of Trebišov, did not involve alcohol. A 19-year-old female driver went off the road into a ditch — she and her passenger suffered minor injuries. The alcohol test for the girl was negative.
No one died in any of the three accidents. But the police remind us again: even "small" amounts of alcohol while driving in Slovakia mean criminal responsibility, and refusing a breathalyzer test does not save the situation — it only makes it worse.
