Trnava is a regional city 56 kilometers from Bratislava via the D1 highway, with 63,184 inhabitants. It's a classic commuter town: housing here is noticeably cheaper than in the capital, and it takes less than an hour to get to work in Bratislava.

Unemployment in the district is 2.45%, the fourth lowest of the 79 districts in the country (Slovakia average is 4.16%). And most importantly for someone who has just arrived: Trnava has its own police department for foreigners – no need to wait in Bratislava queues on Račianska.

Another thing that other Slovak cities don't have: the city maintains an official page for foreigners with welcome guides and has an integration strategy translated into Ukrainian. The welcome PDF guide is available in English, Serbian, and Russian – there is no Ukrainian version yet.

Frequently asked questions about the city

Does Trnava have its own police for foreigners?+

Yes, and this is the city's main practical advantage. The office is at Paulínskej 13, phone +421 961 106 153. This means you don't need to travel to Bratislava for documents.

Temporary protection registration — on Thursdays, 7:30 AM–2:00 PM. The office also serves Malacky, Pezinok, Piešťany, Senica, and Skalica.

Appointments are booked through the Ministry of Interior's reservation system, up to 40 days in advance; the service is free and does not require an electronic chip card.

When does the city hall open and where is the Matrika?+

The Matrika (registry office) and residence registration are at Trhová 3, in one location for the entire city. The city's postal address is different, Hlavná 1, but people are received at Trhová.

And the main catch: the city hall departments and the Matrika do not accept visitors on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They are open Monday (8:00 AM–4:30 PM), Wednesday (until 5:00 PM), and Friday (until 2:00 PM).

The client center, tax office, and cash desk are open all five days — meaning you can submit a document any day, but resolving an issue with a department is not possible.

How much do housing and transport cost in Trnava?+

Rent as of July 25, 2026: one-bedroom €550–€600 (some include utilities and internet), two-bedroom — median €680, most range from €507–€860, with 88 listings in the selection.

Transport is cheap, but only if you get a card: a single ticket costs €0.65 from a chip card, €1.00 by bank card or SMS, and €1.50 in cash to the driver. A monthly pass is €20.80, a discounted pass is €10.40, and an annual pass is €182.

For comparison with Bratislava: a two-bedroom apartment is cheaper here, and it's 56 km to the capital via the D1.

Does the city help foreigners?+

Yes, and noticeably more than other Slovak cities. Trnava has an official page for foreigners with welcome PDF guides: practical information for the first few weeks — housing, work, schools, language learning. The guides are available in English, Serbian, and Russian.

Separately, the city adopted an integration strategy for 2025–2035, translated into Ukrainian.

The foreigner center ConnecTT is also mentioned, but the city's page does not publish its address, hours, or phone number — so first write to info@trnava.sk, rather than going there without prior contact.

Where to go at night if you feel unwell?+

To the Faculty Hospital at A. Žarnova 11, switchboard 033/59 38 111. The emergency room operates 24/7, seven days a week — this is stated directly on the hospital's website.

You need to look for the Pavilón chirurgických disciplín building. Inside, there are four outpatient clinics: neurological, internal medicine, trauma and orthopedic, and surgical.

In case of life threat — 155 or 112.

Before you set off

Trnava City Hall has two non-reception days – Tuesday and Thursday. Departments do not accept visitors on these days, and the Matrika (registry office) also does not. The client center and submission office, however, are open all five days: you can submit documents daily, but you cannot resolve matters with a specific department.
Thursday is a temporary protection day at the police station and a non-reception day at ÚPSVaR (Office of Labor, Social Affairs and Family). Another reason not to plan all your errands for one day.
