Bratislava is the capital and largest city of Slovakia: 480,902 inhabitants, 5 districts, and 17 city parts on 367 km². It is the only capital in the world bordering two countries at once — Austria and Hungary, and Vienna is closer from here than Košice.
It has the highest salary in the country — €1,949 gross in the region compared to the Slovak average of €1,620 — and at the same time, the most expensive housing. The Bratislava region has 47,024 people with temporary protection registered, almost a third of the total in the country.
The main thing to know about the capital before your first visit to institutions: everything related to registration and the registry office (matrika) is handled not at the city hall, but at the úrad (office) of your city part, and there are seventeen such parts. There is no single 'Bratislava registry office address'.

The country's largest city district: 114,000 residents and over 53,000 apartments, a panel building from the 1970s–80s by the Danube. Well-served by public transport.
Who it suits: for those on a limited budget who value transport accessibility
Second most populous — 81,000. It has the most new housing (about 10,000 new apartments) and the city's main hospital with a 24/7 emergency room.
Who it suits: for those seeking a balance of price and new housing
Historic center, 46,000 residents and about 24,000 apartments. The most expensive rent in the city.
Who it suits: for those for whom downtown walkability is critical
44,000 residents. This is where the police for foreigners moved in May 2026 (Račianska 62), with the main train station nearby.

Bratislava has six public universities: Comenius University (founded in 1919, 13 faculties, 21,150 students, rectorate at Šafárikovo nám. 6), Slovak University of Technology, University of Economics, Slovak Medical University, and two art academies. Plus the Academy of the Police Corps and about ten private schools.

Enrollment in primary and secondary schools in Bratislava is handled by the municipal districts, not the city hall; methodological supervision is by RÚŠS. Therefore, questions about a specific school are resolved at the úrad (office) of your district.
The general rule in the country: education is compulsory, enrollment for the 1st grade is usually in April, and a child has the right to a place in the catchment school based on their residential address. Specific dates and lists of documents are announced by each school individually — this year we have not confirmed them from official sources, so check the website of your municipal district.

Autobusová stanica Bratislava Nivy is integrated into the Nivy shopping center on level -1: over 800 international and regional routes per day. The station operates 24/7, ticket office hours are Mon–Fri 7:00 AM–7:00 PM, and on weekends and holidays 8:00 AM–6:00 PM. This is the main departure point for buses to Ukraine.
Bus line 61 goes to M. R. Štefánik Airport (BTS) from the main train station — a direct connection via Račianske mýto and Trnavské mýto, with trolleybuses equipped with luggage racks. At night, N61 does the same, additionally stopping at the Nivy bus station.
⚠️ There is no direct public transport connection from the bus station to the airport during the day — one transfer is required (using line 60 or 40 to 61).
The train station is Bratislava hlavná stanica, with a public transport stop right in front of it.

Every address and every opening time comes from the office's own website and was checked on 2026-07-25. Before a long trip it is still worth calling: schedules change without notice.
Registration for temporary protection and document issuance — on Thursdays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are for national visas and their extensions. Serves districts Bratislava I–V.
Online appointment only — as of 05/18/2026, no appointments are taken without a reservation. Slots open 7 days in advance and are gone quickly; the system is chronically overloaded. The office's email is not published.

There is no reception on Thursdays, but the filing office is open 8:00 AM–3:00 PM — documents can be submitted.

🔴 Registry office and registration are not here. In Bratislava, these are handled at the city part level, and there are 17 of them: Old Town, Ružinov, Petržalka, Nové Mesto, and so on. Look for the úrad of your part based on your address of residence.

This is the only UNB site for which the 24/7 mode is officially confirmed. This cannot be said for the other four hospitals in the network.

The old address Regrútska 4 in Vajnory is permanently closed: the plot has been allocated for the construction of a new national hospital. If you see instructions referring to Regrútska, they are outdated.
And most importantly: no one is accepted without an online appointment anymore. Reservations are made through the Ministry of Interior system; slots open seven days in advance, with about 80 appointments per day, each lasting five minutes.
Hours: Mon 7:30 AM–3:30 PM, Tue 7:30 AM–3:00 PM, Wed 7:30 AM–3:30 PM, Thu 7:30 AM–2:00 PM, Fri 7:30 AM–3:30 PM. Thursday is the day for temporary protection.
Not at the magistrate. In Bratislava, registration and the Matrika (registry office) are handled at the municipal district level, and there are seventeen of them: Old Town, Ružinov, Petržalka, New Town, Karlova Ves, Dúbravka, and so on.
This means you need to go to the office of the district where you actually live, and there is no single "Bratislava Matrika address." A list of all seventeen with links to their offices is available on the city's website.
The magistrate at Primaciálna Street 1 handles city-wide matters; its info line +421 904 099 004 operates Mon–Fri 8:30 AM–4:00 PM and can tell you which district you belong to.
In the Bratislava region, there are 47,024 people with temporary protection registered as of July 19, 2026 — this is almost a third of all in Slovakia (148,413).
There is no separate figure for the "city," and here's a trap: the Ministry of Interior's breakdown by districts shows 29,365 people in Bratislava III, which looks like "almost 30,000 Ukrainians in New Town." In reality, both the old and new addresses of the migration police are located in this district — so the figure seems to show where the status was registered, not where the person lives. Therefore, we only publish the regional total.
According to demographic statistics, there are 18,085 foreigners in the city, but temporary protection is not included there.
Official statistics provide a regional figure: in the Bratislava region, the average salary was €1,949 gross for 2025. This is the highest figure in the country — the average for Slovakia is €1,620, and in the Prešov region, it's €1,285.
There is no separate city figure, but Bratislava makes up the main part of its region, so the regional figure here is closer to reality than elsewhere.

To the emergency room of the Ružinov hospital — Ružinovská 6, phone +421 2 48234 111. It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year; the entrance is separate, on the right side of the building.
Getting there: tram 9 or buses 50 and 75 to the "Nemocnica Ružinov" stop.
The University Hospital has four more locations (Kramáre, Antolská, Old Town, Podunajské Biskupice), but the 24-hour operation is officially confirmed only for Ružinov — so go there at night. In case of life threat — 155 or 112.

Petržalka — the largest district in the country (114,000 residents, 53,000 apartments), a panel block area across the Danube, the cheapest and best covered by transport. Ružinov — 81,000 residents, the most new housing, and the city's main hospital. Old Town — the center, the most expensive: even a parking space in a garage costs €120–€200 per month. New Town — the migration police and the main train station are located here.
According to market reviews, the cheapest rent is in Vrakuňa and Podunajské Biskupice. We did not confirm exact rental prices by district with an official source this time, so check live listings in the housing section.
Official pay statistics at city level barely exist in Slovakia, so we show the region and say which one. Office addresses and prices in the guide always carry a source and a date of checking — without those they do not appear here at all.
