Staré Mesto
Historic center with the longest pedestrian zone, institutions and universities nearby. The most expensive housing in the city.
Who it suits: for those who value walking and not depending on transport
What you need to know about living Košice: where to look for housing and work, where to go for documents, and how to travel to Ukraine.
Košice — Slovakia's second-largest city (222,286 inhabitants as of January 1, 2026) and the country's largest city near the Ukrainian border: it's about 90 km to the Vyšné Nemecké — Uzhhorod crossing, compared to almost 500 km from Bratislava. For a family that doesn't want to be too far from home, this is the main argument for moving east.
The labor market here stands on two very different legs. Metallurgy — U. S. Steel Košice with almost 9,000 employees — hires people without high language requirements. IT and shared services (Deutsche Telekom IT Solutions and the rest of the cluster) require English or German, but pay noticeably higher. A third pillar is being built right now: the Volvo plant near Košice is planned to open in 2027.
The main structural feature to understand right away: Košice is divided into 22 city districts, and each has its own úrad (office). There is no single 'Košice registry address' — permanent residence registration and minor municipal matters are handled at your place of residence, not at the main city hall.
Every figure carries its source and period. Where a number comes from listings rather than official statistics, it is marked as a market snapshot.
typical majority — €600–€700; 65 listings in the selection
typical majority — €700–€900; 172 listings
most listings say 'vrátane energií' (including utilities). So €600 in Košice and €600 in Bratislava are not the same thing
30 days; discounts for pupils, students up to 26, seniors up to 70
30 and 60 minutes, paper; electronic — €1.10 and €1.30
+13.3% year-on-year — the largest increase among all Slovak regions. This is the region's figure, not the city's
the second-highest rate in the country. Separate figures for Košice city have not existed since 2023
of whom 1,577 are EU citizens. People with temporary protection are not included in this number
A short description of each district — what the housing is like and who it suits. We deliberately do not rank a “best district”.
Prices below are from the same market snapshot on 07/25/2026, based on ads for 2-room apartments. These are the prices landlords asked for that day, not statistics of concluded contracts.

Historic center with the longest pedestrian zone, institutions and universities nearby. The most expensive housing in the city.
Who it suits: for those who value walking and not depending on transport

Large housing estate in the west, near Trieda SNP — where the foreigner police, city hall, and main hospital are located.
Who it suits: for those who frequently visit institutions, and for medical staff

Panel housing estate near Jazero lake, greenery and water nearby, to the center — by bus or tram.
Who it suits: for families who want space and water nearby

One of the largest housing estates in the north of the city, dense panel construction, schools and kindergartens within walking distance.
Who it suits: for those looking for the cheapest balance of price and infrastructure

Southwestern outskirts near the U. S. Steel plant. The cheapest housing among those noted in the snapshot.
Who it suits: for those who work at the steel plant

A small city district in the southeast, closer to private housing.
Who it suits: for those who want quiet and have a car
The city's largest employers, with their industry and size taken from official sources. Headcount is given as a range — that is how the registers publish it.
Košice is metal plus IT. These are two different entry points to the labor market: the plant hires without high language requirements, while shared services will not hire without English or German.
Where to go with a child, and what to do with a foreign diploma.
Košice is the country's second-largest university center. A list of universities, faculties, and programs in the city from our catalog is on the Universities of Košice page.
Recognition of Ukrainian certificates and diplomas is handled by RÚŠS Košice (Moldavská cesta 3110/10B). Separate hours are allocated for this agenda — Mon–Wed 8:00 AM–12:00 PM.
School education in Slovakia is compulsory, enrollment for the 1st grade is every April. A child has the right to a place in the school serving their residential address. General rules are in our Education Hub.
The important thing is to know in advance what is open in the evening and at night, and where to take a child.
Both UNLP sites receive emergency patients 24 hours a day. However, the queue there is based on the severity of the condition, not the time of arrival: 'Poradie pacientov teda neurčuje čas príchodu na ošetrenie'. A mild case will wait a long time and may be redirected to a specialized clinic. This is not chaos, it's a rule — and knowing it in advance means not wasting an evening.
At both sites: cash desk 7:30 AM–2:30 PM, mailroom 7:00 AM–3:00 PM.
Pediatric emergency care in Košice is not at UNLP, but at a separate children's hospital. Its schedule is not confirmed in our check, so do not go to UNLP with a child 'by analogy': call 155 or the hospital's 24-hour switchboard.
Tickets, passes and distances, taken from the operator's official fares.
Buses, trolleybuses, and trams. A 30-minute ticket costs €1.20 on paper and €1.10 electronically, a 60-minute ticket costs €1.40 and €1.30. A monthly pass is €30, a discounted pass is €15. The fare is deliberately set so that a prepaid ticket is more advantageous than single tickets.
The nearest major crossing is Vyšné Nemecké — Uzhhorod, about 90 km via the E50 road through Michalovce. Košice lies directly on the main west-east corridor towards Ukraine, which is why it is Slovakia's most convenient large city for those who travel home regularly.
Bratislava ≈310 km · Kyiv 850 km · Vienna 467 km · Prague 667 km — according to the city itself.
Prices and times are a dated snapshot of the market, not an offer.
Every address and every opening time comes from the office's own website and was checked on 2026-07-25. Before a long trip it is still worth calling: schedules change without notice.
Registration for temporary protection (dočasné útočisko) and document issuance — on Thursdays. Tuesdays and Thursdays are for national visas and their extensions.
The office serves not only the city: Košice I–IV, Košice-surroundings, Gelnica, and Spišská Nová Ves. Email is not published — only the 'Pošli správu' (Send message) form on the website.
Official page →Registration as a job seeker, material need allowance (dávka v hmotnej núdzi), state child benefits, job vacancies.
This is the square near the main train station — do not confuse it with Trieda SNP, where the police and city hall are. They are on different ends of the city.
Official page →General municipal affairs, cashier, social department (`socialne@kosice.sk`, +421 55 641 91 99), building authority.
Matrika and registration — not here. They are at the level of your city district (there are 22), so you need to look for the address by your residential area.
Official page →Nostrification of Ukrainian certificates and diplomas, questions about enrolling a child in school, contacts for schools in the region.
There are separate hours for nostrifications — Mon–Wed until 12:00. It is useless to come with this matter on Thursday and Friday.
Official page →The city's largest medical facility. Emergency reception is open 24/7.
Second emergency reception, also 24/7. The queue is based on the severity of the condition, not the time of arrival.
From 07/16/2026, part of the emergency service at Rastislavova will be temporarily moved due to reconstruction — call and clarify which site is receiving before you go.
Official page →To the nearest major crossing Vyšné Nemecké — Uzhhorod is about 90 km via the E50 road through Michalovce, approximately two and a half hours, considering the border queue.
This is the main practical advantage of Košice over Bratislava, from which the same crossing is almost 500 km away. Official sources do not publish the exact mileage to the border, so we write 'about 90 km' instead of a precise figure.
At the police department for foreigners — Trieda SNP 35, phone +421 961 931 208.
Important: registration for dočasné útočisko (temporary protection) and the application for a document are officially tied to Thursdays, and Thursday is the shortest day, until 2:00 PM. This is the only schedule for all Slovak departments, published on minv.sk. The department also serves Košice-surroundings, Gelnica, and Spišská Nová Ves, so it's crowded on Thursdays — arrive in the morning.
As of July 25, 2026, listings on nehnutelnosti.sk asked for €500–€800 for a 1-bedroom (typically €600–€700) and €600–€1,300 for a 2-bedroom (typically €700–€900).
There is a local peculiarity that makes comparisons with other cities misleading: most Košice listings already include utilities ('vrátane energií'). This means €600 here and €600 in Bratislava are different amounts. The first thing to ask the landlord is whether utilities are included in the price.
These are prices in listings, not statistics of concluded contracts.
Honest answer: there is no separate official figure for the city. Statistics are published by region — in the Kosice region, the average salary is €1,629 gross for Q2 2025.
At the same time, the region showed the largest growth among all regions of Slovakia: +13.3% nominally and +8.8% really. Kosice, as the regional center, pulls the region up, meaning the actual figure in the city itself is higher than the regional one — but by how much, no one officially counts.
Salaries by profession can be found in our salary directory.
To the emergency room of the university hospital — it is open 24/7 at both locations: Trieda SNP 1 and Rastislavova 43.
Be prepared for a wait: the queue there is based on the severity of the condition, not the time of arrival. A mild case will wait a long time and may be redirected to an outpatient clinic. In case of a life threat, call 155 (ambulance) or 112.
Do not go to UNLP with a child: pediatric emergency care in Kosice is a separate institution, and we have not confirmed its schedule.
Not at the magistrate's office. Kosice is divided into 22 city parts, and address registration, vital records (Matrika), and minor municipal matters are handled at the úrad (office) of your city part — at your residential address.
The magistrate's office at Trieda SNP 48/A is responsible for city-wide matters: the social department, the building authority, the cashier. Wednesday is a long day there, until 6:00 PM.
It depends on which of the city's two markets suits you.
Metallurgy and manufacturing — U. S. Steel with almost 9,000 employees — hires people without high language requirements, and this is a traditional entry point for newcomers.
IT and shared services — Deutsche Telekom IT Solutions and the rest of the cluster — pay significantly more, but English or German is required there; Slovak is often not mandatory.
The starting point for registration is ÚPSVaR at Staničné námestie 9 (closed on Thursdays). Current offers are in the jobs section.
Official pay statistics at city level barely exist in Slovakia, so we show the region and say which one. Office addresses and prices in the guide always carry a source and a date of checking — without those they do not appear here at all.
