Poprad is a city below the High Tatras and the main gateway to the mountains: the railway, airport, and the Tatra Electric Railway all start here. There are 1,679 people with temporary protection registered in the district.

Rent here is noticeably lower than the national average: one-room apartments have a median of €470, and two-room apartments cost €600. The listings portal directly states that this is below Slovakia's average.

The main practical advantage of Poprad over its neighbors: all emergency care is gathered in one place. The on-call service for adults, for children, and the dental service are all at Banícká 803/28, in the hospital you're going to anyway. In Prešov, for example, these are in different parts of the city.

Pass for €30 per year — if you are registered here

A regular annual pass costs €250, but for a person with permanent residence in Poprad, there is a special tariff "Cesta za zdravím" (Journey for Health) — €30 for 365 days. This is probably the cheapest annual pass in Slovakia.

All prepaid tickets are issued only on a transport card — there are no paper ones. Monthly — €30, discounted €20, 90 days €75, 180 days €140.

Single ticket: €1.00 by card and €1.20 in cash for 30 minutes; €1.30 and €1.60 for an hour. For guests, there are tourist passes for 24 hours (€5) and 72 hours (€12).

Gateway to the High Tatras

Poprad is the region's transport hub: the Tatra Electric Railway goes to the mountains from here, and the Poprad-Tatry airport is also located here. It's about 70 km to Prešov, and about 100 km to Košice.

Where should a resident of Poprad go for temporary protection?+

To Prešov, Ľubochnianska 2 — there is no dedicated police department for foreigners in Poprad. It's about 70 km away.

The registration for Dočasné útočisko (Temporary Protection) and the application for a document are accepted on Thursdays, 7:30 AM–2:00 PM. Appointments for these services open 21 days in advance — book early, as the department serves ten districts, and there's a queue on Thursdays.

Where to go in the evening if you feel unwell?+

To Banícku 803/28, to the hospital — and that's a refreshingly simple answer, because everything is in one place.

Emergency service for adults operates 7:00 AM–10:00 PM, for children — 8:00 AM–8:00 PM, dental — 9:00 AM–1:00 PM. The hospital phone is available 24/7: 052/712 51 11.

After 10 PM, emergency services are closed; afterwards, it's the hospital's emergency room or 155.

For comparison: in Prešov, emergency care is located at the other end of the city from the hospital, so Poprad's setup is more convenient.

How much does a public transport pass cost in Poprad?+

Monthly — €30, discounted €20 (children 6–18, pupils and students up to 26). Then: 90 days — €75, 180 days — €140, year — €250.

But if you have permanent residence in Poprad, there is a special tariff "Cesta za zdravím": annual pass for €30. This is an eightfold difference, and it's worth registering your permanent address just for this.

Important: all prepaid tickets are only on a transport card, there are no paper ones. A single ticket for 30 minutes costs €1.00 from the card and €1.20 in cash.

When is the Poprad mayor's office open?+

On Monday and Thursday 7:30 AM–3:30 PM, on Wednesday 7:30 AM–5:00 PM. On Tuesdays and Fridays, the mayor's office is closed — this is the most unusual schedule among Slovak cities.

Before you set off

The Poprad City Hall has two non-reception days — Tuesday and Friday. They are open Monday and Thursday (7:30 AM–3:30 PM) and Wednesday until 5:00 PM. This is the most unusual schedule among Slovak cities, and it's the easiest one to get caught by.
The police for foreigners are in Prešov, 70 km away: Ľubochnianska 2, phone +421 961 803 205. There is no local office in Poprad. Registration for temporary protection is on Thursday until 2:00 PM.
