Michalovce: A Guide for Foreigners

At the Police Department for Foreigners at Jána Hollého 53/46, phone +421 961 723 220. Registration for Dočasné útočisko (temporary refuge) and applications for documents are accepted on Thursdays, 7:30 AM–2:00 PM.

⚠️ Important: do not go to the large 2022 reception center, which old articles still refer to — its current status is unconfirmed. The current entry point is OCP.

The department serves six districts of eastern Slovakia, so it is crowded on Thursdays. Appointments open 21 days in advance via portal.minv.sk.

It depends on how you are traveling.

By car — Vyšné Nemecké — Uzhhorod (operates continuously, pedestrians and cyclists are also allowed there) or Ubľa — Malý Berezny (also continuously, and buses go through this one). On foot — Veľké Slemence — Malé Selmence, but only from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM: this is the only pedestrian crossing, and it closes at night. By train — Čierna nad Tisou — Chop, operates continuously.

The Maťovské Vojkovce — Pavlovce crossing is for cargo; passenger cars are not allowed there.

The main employers are manufacturing companies: Unomedical (medical devices, ConvaTec group, 500–999 employees), BSH Drives and Pumps from the Bosch group, Bel Slovensko dairy, Štefan Kukura Hospital, the transport company ARRIVA, and the wood processing company NOTHEGGER — all with 250–499 employees.

These are manufacturing jobs where the requirements for Slovak language proficiency are usually lower than in an office.
