Martin: a guide for foreigners

What you need to know about living Martin: where to look for housing and work, where to go for documents, and how to travel to Ukraine.

AVERAGE PAY IN THE REGION

UKRAINIANS WITH TEMPORARY PROTECTION

POPULATION

Martin is a city of 50,153 inhabitants in the Turiec valley, with a rare set for its size: a university hospital with a medical faculty of Comenius University, founded back in 1962. In terms of medicine, it is superior to most Slovak cities twice its size.

The second feature is prices. It is the cheapest rental market among cities in this region: one-room apartments start from €280, and in the nearby Vrútky, which are in the same transport zone, a two-room apartment was found for €300.

In the Martin district, 1,258 people with temporary protection are registered — about 2.5% of the city's population. This is noticeably less than in Trenčín or Žilina: Martin is not a center of the Ukrainian community in the region, and this is worth knowing in advance.

Medical faculty instead of its own university

Martin does not have its own university — two branches of Comenius University operate here: the Jessenius Faculty of Medicine (since 1962) and a site for the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences.

However, it is the medical faculty, along with the university hospital, that makes Martin a notable medical center — a rarity for a city of 50,000. Programs are in our education catalog.

School and kindergarten

The city maintains a section for schools on its website with subsections "Zápis žiakov" (Enrollment of pupils) and "Zápis detí na predprimárne vzdelávanie" (Enrollment of children for pre-primary education). We have not officially confirmed specific dates for 2026/2027 — the general country framework: applications for the first grade are usually in April, for kindergarten in May.

For exact dates, contact the school department of the city hall: +421 43 4204 111, msu@martin.sk. Nostrification of educational documents is done through RÚŠS in Žilina (Komenského 2226/35, secretariat 041/32 26 703).

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the city

Where does a resident of Martin go for foreigner documents?+

To Ružomberok, Námestie Andreja Hlinku 74, 6th floor, phone +421 961 483 205. Not to Žilina — even though Žilina is closer (28 km) and is the regional capital.

This is stated directly in the official list of the Ministry of Interior: okres Martin belongs to the department in Ružomberok along with Liptovský Mikuláš, Dolný Kubín, Námestovo, Turčianske Teplice, and Tvrdošín.

Registration for temporary protection is on Thursdays, 7:30 AM–2:00 PM; appointments open 21 days in advance. Research bases describe this incorrectly — trust minv.sk.

How much does housing cost in Martin?+

This is one of the cheapest markets in the country. As of July 25, 2026: one-bedroom apartments €280–€540 (main mass €380–€510, 32 listings), two-bedroom apartments €300–€800 — the portal shows an average of €560 and a typical range of €450–€700.

The cheapest is in neighboring Vrútky: there, one-bedroom apartments of 33 m² were found for €300 and 40 m² for €380. Vrútky is a separate town but is in the same public transport zone, meaning daily trips cost the same as city travel.

Another notable listing: a 72 m² two-bedroom apartment on Štúrovo square for €350 — a large area for a low price.

When is the Martin city hall open?+

The schedule here is more complex than it seems: Tuesdays and Thursdays are half-days.

Monday 7:30 AM–4:00 PM and Wednesday 7:30 AM–4:45 PM are full days. On Tuesdays (until 3:00 PM), the registry office (matrika) and the building authority are closed. On Thursdays (until 3:00 PM), only the information desk and the cashier are open. Friday is until 1:00 PM.

So, to get a birth certificate or a certificate from the registry office, you should go on Monday or Wednesday.

And one more thing: at the city hall, office 430 on the fourth floor, sits the official for housing and documents for Ukrainians — +421 43 4204 252.

Before you set off

🔴 There is no police for foreigners in Martin — and you need to go to Ružomberok, not Žilina. This is the most expensive mistake in the region: the regional city of Žilina is 28 km away, but the Martin district is officially served by OCP PZ Ružomberok, Námestie Andreja Hlinku 74, 6th floor.
Tuesday and Thursday are not full days at the city hall. On Tuesday, the Matrika (registry office) and the construction office are closed, on Thursday only the information desk and the cash desk are open. Full days are Monday, Wednesday (until 4:45 PM), and Friday until 1:00 PM.

Official pay statistics at city level barely exist in Slovakia, so we show the region and say which one. Office addresses and prices in the guide always carry a source and a date of checking — without those they do not appear here at all.
