Banská Bystrica — a regional city in the heart of Slovakia: 72,505 inhabitants in 103 km², nineteen city parts, the Hron River, and the Urpín hill above the center. 3,716 Ukrainians with temporary protection are registered in the district — almost half of the entire region's community.

The main thing to understand about this region before moving: the city and the region are different worlds. Unemployment in the Banská Bystrica district itself is 3.40%, on par with the best in the country. But in the southern districts of the same region — Revúca 8.07%, Rimavská Sobota 10.44%. This means that the statement 'Banská Bystrica region is the poorest' is only true for the south, not for the regional center.

The city is a university and administrative center: Matej Bel University with seven faculties, the Academy of Arts, the Faculty of Health of the Slovak Medical University, and the largest hospital in central Slovakia — F. D. Roosevelt University Hospital.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the city

Where to go in Banská Bystrica for temporary protection?+

At the police department for foreigners at Sládkovičova 4343/25, phone +421 961 603 230.

Registration for Dočasné útočisko (temporary protection) and application for a document are accepted on Thursdays, 7:30 AM–2:00 PM — this is the only official schedule for all of Slovakia.

The department serves eight districts, including Zvolen, Brezno, and Detva. However, residents of the southern part of the region — Rimavská Sobota, Lučenec, Revúca — belong to the department in Rimavská Sobota.

Is unemployment high here? They say it's the poorest region.+

This is only half true, and the difference is critical when choosing a city.

In Banská Bystrica district itself, unemployment is 3.40% (June 2026) — on par with the best districts in Slovakia. In neighboring Zvolen, it's even lower, 3.29%.

However, in the southern districts of the same region: Revúca 8.07%, Rimavská Sobota 10.44%. These are the ones that pull the regional average up to 5.42%.

Therefore, 'Banská Bystrica region is the poorest' refers to the south, not the regional center. When reading statistics for the region, check which district is being referred to.

How much is a pass and who travels for free?+

Monthly pass — €20, reduced fare €12. A single ticket costs €1.00 in cash to the driver and only €0.50 with a transport card, which is half price.

Since July 15, 2026, a new price list with expanded benefits is in effect: — children and students — reduced tariff up to 18 years old; — seniors — reduced fare from 63 years old; — free travel from 70 years old (a transport card is required); — stroller with a child under 6 years old, along with a companion — free.

So, the first thing to do after moving is to get a transport card.

Where to go in the evening if you feel unwell?+

To the F. D. Roosevelt University Hospital at Nám. L. Svobodu 1 — this is the largest medical facility in central Slovakia.

There are two different numbers, and it's important not to confuse them: emergency department — +421 48 441 3700, and the on-call outpatient clinic (evenings, weekends) — +421 48 414 6666.

The hospital does not publish exact hours for the on-call clinic on its website, so call before you go. In case of a life threat — 155 or 112.

Before you set off

On Thursdays, both the registry office and the employment office are closed. The registry office is not open at all on Thursdays, and the ÚPSVaR (Public Employment Service) has a non-reception day — Thursday is designated by the police for temporary protection. One day for three institutions does not work out here.

Official pay statistics at city level barely exist in Slovakia, so we show the region and say which one. Office addresses and prices in the guide always carry a source and a date of checking — without those they do not appear here at all.
