The Armed Forces Academy of General Milan Rastislav Štefánik is a state university in the city of Liptovský Mikuláš, founded in 1973. It trains specialists for the Slovak Armed Forces with a focus on military and strategic education.

How much does education cost at the Armed Forces Academy in Liptovský Mikuláš?+

Education is completely free. A student admitted to the bachelor's program becomes a professional soldier in preparatory state service and receives 50% of a soldier's pay (2nd degree, 1st pay grade). Accommodation and meals during studies are also provided free of charge.

The only mandatory payment is an administrative fee for participation in the admission process of €20, which must be paid by bank transfer by February 28, 2026. This fee is non-refundable if you do not attend or do not pass the admission process.

Do I have to serve in the Slovak army after my studies?+

Yes. The graduate is obliged to remain in military service for 9 years after completing their studies. If the studies are not completed successfully, the student must return all material and financial costs incurred for them.

To advance to temporary state service and the rank of lieutenant, you need to complete the second degree of education — bachelor's plus two years of engineering/master's studies (according to Act No. 281/2015).

What language is used for teaching at AOS and what programs are available?+

Education is conducted in Slovak; there are no foreign language programs at the moment. The Academy trains specialists in the fields of state security and defense, electronic armament systems, military communication and information systems, and armament systems.

The Academy is located in Liptovský Mikuláš (Demänová 393). According to the University Portal (Portál VŠ), the institution dates back to 1973 (the modern academy was re-established in 2004), with about 606 students enrolled.
